The authors present the case of a 17 years old male who developed pneumococcal meningitis simultaneously with tuberculous meningitis. Diagnosis was established upon clinical and laboratory criteria. Diagnosis of pneumococcal meningitis was sustained by direct microscopic exam of smear, that showed encapsulated gram-positive diplococci and the latex particle agglutination test that was positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae. Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis was established on direct exam of smear of pellicle and positive cultures for Koch bacillus. His evolution was difficult with triventricular non aggressive hydrocephalus, although he was treated correctly with antibiotics (meropenem, rifampin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, streptomycin), corticosteroids and cultures became negative afterwards. As the number of immunodepressed subjects is bigger, the authors stress the existence of this association (pneumoncoccus+Koch bacillus ) as cause of acute bacterial meningitis.

Trend of bacterial meningitis in Bahrain from 1990 to 2013 and effect of introduction of new vaccines.

Meningitis is among the 10 commonest infectious causes of death worldwide. This retrospective analysis of reported cases of meningitis in Bahrain aimed to assess the trend in the incidence of bacterial meningitis from 1990 to 2013, before and after the introduction of new vaccines. Of 1455 reported cases of meningitis during the study period 73.1% were viral and 26.9% were bacterial etiology (t...

Meningitis due to mixed infection with penicillin-resistant and penicillin-susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major cause of bacterial meningitis. We report a case of meningitis due to a mixed infection with two distinct strains of S. pneumoniae: one penicillin-resistant strain of serotype 9V and one penicillin-susceptible strain of serotype 7. The two strains exhibited different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles.

Molecular Detection and Serotyping of Streptococcus Pneumoniae in Children with Suspected Meningitis in Northeast Iran

Background: To date, more than 90 Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) capsular serotypes are known. The prevalence of these serotypes varies according to the geographical area and the regional vaccination program. Due to the lack of regular vaccination programs for S. pneumoniae in developing countries, serotyping of the prevalent isolates is useful in selecting the correct vaccine. The pr...

1486Geographic information system (GIS) mapping of endemic meningitis of 53 municipalities in three departments of Colombia

Background. Application of new tools for epidemiological investigations, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS), offers a new approach and possibilities for the eradication or control of infectious diseases. For this reason we developed epidemiological GIS-based maps for meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae typo b (Hib), Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp), Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) and...
